Sometimes Your Purpose Finds YOU!

Anyone who knows me knows I’m into watching sports. My inner cheerleader finds more excitement and entertainment in a game than in Housewife drama or matriarchy in Bringington (is that what it’s called?). The NBA is my thing, the Detroit Pistons are my love but, I always celebrate any team’s first championship.

On June 12, 2023, Nikola Jokic led the Denver Nuggets to win their first national championship. The next day this picture hit social media and touched my heart. Jovic was 5 years old he took this picture. He was gifted with the hoody and had no clue about basketball and not Colorado. As a child, he lived in a war-filled Serbia, yet, somehow he found himself playing basketball and winning his first championship.

When I saw the picture and learned Jokavic’s story, I praised God. Sometimes our purpose will find us before we knew how to spell p-u-r-p-o-s-e. As I praised, Jerimiah 29:11 came to my mind, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” I thank God for verifying His Word with one picture.

Did you know your purpose was designed for you before you exited your mom’s womb? If you have a book idea or want to be an author, this might be your purpose. Just like Jokavic, maybe your purpose is waiting for you to begin believing and walking in it. Before I was born, I was destined to be an author, writing is my purpose but, living it is a completely different story. The following 8 scriptures remind me of my purpose and motivate me to walk in it as I finish my books and blogs. If you are unsure of your purpose, meditate on these scriptures and see what God reveals.

If you are struggling with the idea of writing a book or being an author is your purpose, meditate on the scriptures and write your book. If you doubt you are living in your purpose, or don’t know your purpose, these 8 scriptures might help, inspire, or confirm you are purpose-living.

1. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5

Sometimes taking the step to become an author can seem crazy or makes no sense to the average person. Why write a book? Who am I to write a book? I definitely don’t have time to write a book. And many more thoughts may only add more doubt to believing your book has meaning or fulfills your purpose. I won’t lie, taking the title of author is hard and heavy. In the minds of the haters, naysayers, and ourselves being an author can be just as imaginary as the characters in our minds. My question is, why are you leaning toward your understanding and holding reservations to pursue this passion? Why not follow what God told you or keeps telling you? If he said “Write a book,” I suggest to stop adding logic and just try writing a page or two today.

2. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

The picture of Jokavic and his brother holds so many messages about purpose and how God’s promises never return null. God planned for him to play for the Nuggets. He dropped that pearl in his life early. He was five years old living in a country with no professional basketball team. God’s vision for Jokavic’s purpose was obvious but, didn’t manifest until twenty or more years later. That picture didn’t circulate until they won the championship. It’s a reminder that we all have a purpose and will always get victory if we pursue it. I knew being an author was my purpose as a kid but, I didn’t start living my purpose until twenty or more years later. What about you? What is your purpose? When did you recognize it? Are you walking in your purpose now?

3. For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

Stats say over 81% of Americans want to write a book. But, nothing says when you should pursue it. As the scripture says, there is a season for everything. Just because you desire to write a book doesn’t mean you’re supposed to write a book. Nor does this means it’s your purpose. If it’s your purpose to write a book, it will happen. It becomes between God and you to identify the timing of your writing season.

4. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. Habakkuk 2:3

THIS is the scripture that spoke to my spirit and fingers. I truly think this scripture was created for writers. It encourages us to write and get it out to the public. Sometimes doubt, distractions, and fear can delay our purpose. Write your book, share it with the public, and watch how Jesus will make it soar.

5. The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. Proverbs 20:5

As I began my voyage to become an author, I wrote an affirmation for my company, DreamwriterInk!, and my future books. It took me about a week to write it and I began saying it a few times a day and praying for God to bring my affirmations to fruition. Initially, nothing changed or manifested. My faith began to weaken and I wondered if quitting my job to become a professional writer wasn’t my purpose. During this growth process, I found an article about Octavia Butler, Behold Octavia Butler’s Motivational Notes to Self that shared Butler’s writing dreams, goals, and motivation:

If you didn’t know it already, Butler accomplished all her goals. She spoke it consistently and believed it was her truth. Her heart told her she was a writer and she dug it out of the deep waters by speaking her affirmations which fueled her books. If you need the motivation to finish your book, why not write some affirmations for your writing, book ideas, and future successes as an author? Speak them daily then write a few pages or a blog about your upcoming book.

6. A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.

Proverbs 18:16

Your gifts will nurture your purpose. If writing is your gift, use it to bring attention to those in power and those with money $$$. Accepting my writing as a God-given gift has opened several doors and opportunities. Doors I never knew existed. I’m not only a writer, I’m a blogger and book publisher. All these doors opened because God gifted me with strong writing skills. If your purpose is to write a book or books why not write more? Why not blog? Write and sell your articles. Teach others to write better. Once you accept the title of writer, watch countless doors will open for you.

7. “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” Proverbs 19:21

Over the years, I’ve taken many career routes before surrendering to God and his purpose for my life. I went from trying to be a lawyer, then a Director of Diversity at a college, and even a director of US government TRiO grant programs. With each attempt I was miserable but, I always found joy when writing. I fought and delayed my vision because of fear and my understanding of purpose. God was never invited to the conversation. He was always there and reminded me of the vision He gave me at age 8. No matter how far I tried to run from this and delay this with distraction after distraction, God always brought me back to writing. The purpose he instilled in me while in third or fourth grade. Once I accepted this happiness found a new home in my actions and spirit. If God gave you a book idea, understand it will never change or stop you from pursuing it. Why delay this peace and happiness? Just write the book.

8. And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. Isaiah 30:20-21

Who is in your corner? Do you have a cheerleader or two that supports your book idea? Is it a friend, a sibling, your parent, or a teacher? When in doubt or fear about my book dreams, I always seek Jesus or turn to a mentor or the teacher that inspired my purpose. Having a few cheerleaders to support you will push you to finish that book.

Hopefully, these words have inspired and sparked an interest in pursuing your purpose. Always remember if God says it’s supposed to happen, more times than not, it’s going to happen. If He says, write a book is your purpose or will aid you as you pursue your purpose, don’t delay, write your book.
